Bulawayo Man Fatally Stabs Kombi Driver Over US$1 Fare

Bizarre Crimes and Courts Murder

A shocking incident unfolded in Bulawayo on Saturday night, as a 24-year-old artisanal miner allegedly stabbed a kombi driver to death following a dispute over fare payment.

The suspect, identified as Liberty Ncube, was accompanied by an accomplice, Nkosilathi Sibanda, who is currently on the run.

The victim, Mr. Simbarashe Chabata, tragically lost his life during the altercation.

According to Bulawayo provincial spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube, the incident occurred when Ncube and Sibanda boarded Mr. Chabata’s kombi in the city, intending to travel to Cowdray Park around 10 pm.

A disagreement arose over the fare, leading Mr. Chabata to stop the vehicle and attempt to collect payment from the passengers. However, Ncube and Sibanda refused to pay.

As tensions escalated, Ncube allegedly stabbed Mr. Chabata in the left shoulder and palm. Fearing for their safety, other passengers quickly fled the kombi in different directions.

Despite attempting to escape, Mr. Chabata was pursued by the two assailants and stabbed again, this time fatally, about 20 meters away from the vehicle.

Following the incident, one of the accused persons, Liberty Ncube was arrested and is now cooperating with the police investigation.

Meanwhile, the authorities have launched a manhunt for Nkosilathi Sibanda, who managed to evade capture.

Inspector Ncube has urged the public to come forward with any information that may assist in locating him.

“Mr Chabata sustained injuries and was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital where he died upon admission.

“We have arrested Ncube, an artisanal miner operating in Inyathi area. His accomplice Sibanda fled after committing the crime and we have launched a manhunt,”

said Insp Ncube.
