A 13-year-old Grade 7 Mbare girl is four months pregnant after she was allegedly raped and impregnated by her brother.
Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, said the girl was subjected to sexual abuse by her 22-year-old brother from November last year.
He said the girl was found to be four months pregnant at Sally Mugabe Family Support Clinic during a medical examination.
“Police are investigating a case involving a minor child who was raped by her sibling aged 22 since last year.
“Circumstances were that sometime in November 2022, the accused person slept on the complainant’s blankets, while they were watching television.
“The accused switched off the lights, and covered the complainant’s mouth with the blanket before raping her once.
“He threatened to kill the complainant if she disclosed the matter to anyone.”
He added:
“Sometime in December towards Christmas, the accused person came home and found the complainant sleeping in her room.
“The accused switched off the lights and sneaked into complainant’s blankets and raped her once.
“On March 29, the complainant disclosed the matter to her aunt and the perpetrator is yet to be arrested,” said Insp Chakanza.
The case is a carbon copy of one which emerged in South Africa in January where a man, who raped a then-13-year-old girl at Phase 6, in Bloemspruit vicinity, Bloemfontein, was sentenced to 20 years in jail.
Keabetswe Christiano (22) was convicted of raping a minor.
The victim’s mother reported that when her child fell ill, she took her to a doctor and they discovered that she was actually five months pregnant.
Upon questioning, the child revealed her ordeal at the hands of Keabetswe.
There has been an upsurge in cases, around the world, in which rapists are targeting teenage girls.
In January, a suspected serial rapist, who allegedly broke into houses and raped 16 girls in Glen View and Budiriro, was arrested and his trial continues.
Last month, Denver police and prosecutors revealed they were pursuing a rape case against a man who served as the music director at St. John’s School and church in the United States.
Diego Marroquin, 36, allegedly raped a 13-year-old female student from the school on a balcony overlooking the church in May last year.
Earlier this month, a British man was jailed for 12 years for raping a vulnerable 13-year-old girl in a park in Southport.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said Christopher Wade, 53, plied her with alcohol and drugs and took the victim into Marine Park where he sexually assaulted and raped her.
A few days ago, an Israeli man was convicted for the rape of a 13-year-old girl at a state-operated coronavirus quarantine hotel in Jaffa in 2021.
In a plea deal, Yarin Sherf, admitted to the charges, which also included providing the girl with alcohol and offering her drugs.
