Kenya’s Ruth Chepngetich shattered the women’s marathon world record, blazing through the Chicago Marathon with a time of 2:09:57—nearly two minutes faster than Ethiopian Tigst Assefa’s previous record set at the 2023 Berlin Marathon.

This feat makes Chepngetich the first woman to break the 2:10 barrier in marathon history. Kenyan Marathon Runner Breaks the World Record

“I feel amazing. This was my dream, and I made it happen,” said Chepngetich, a 2019 world marathon champion. “I’ve been fighting hard for this world record, and now I’ve fulfilled it.”

This marks Chepngetich’s third Chicago Marathon win. Last year, she narrowly missed beating Brigid Kosgei’s world record by just 14 seconds. Over the past six years, four of the top five fastest women’s marathon times have been achieved on the flat Chicago course.

In the men’s race, Kenya’s John Korir set a personal best, finishing in 2:02:44. He credited last year’s champion, Kelvin Kiptum, as his inspiration. Kiptum set the men’s world record in Chicago before tragically dying in a car accident at just 24. Korir said, “If Kiptum could run under 2:01, why not me? I believed in myself and pushed for my best.”

Ethiopia’s Mohamed Esa finished second, with fellow Kenyan Amos Kipruto claiming third in a race dominated by Kenyan athletes, who took four of the top five spots. Kenyan Marathon Runner Breaks the World Record
