SAD: Two Cousin Sisters Drown In Donnybrook Racecourse Disused Pit

Two girls from the same family in Manresa drowned on Sunday while swimming in a disused quarry pit near Donnybrook Racecourse.

The now-deceased children have been identified as Tafara Masamba (15) and Blessing Munemo (12).

Catherine Masango, a family member, told NewZimbabwe.com that the two cousin-sisters left their home saying they were attending a car racing event. Said Masango:

They left the house saying they were going to church but later came back saying there was no church.

Together with other children from the neighbourhood they left and went to Donnybrook. We later heard that they had drowned.

The children who were at the scene said Tafara tried to rescue Blessing who was stuck in the mud but they later drowned together.

Panashe Nyashanu an eyewitness told NewZimbabwe.com that the girls had already died when people arrived at the scene. Said Nyashanu:

They had come to swim when they met fate. This is the first time that such an incident has happened.

The 15-year-old one washed her clothes and asked her friend for help after being stuck in the mud. Unfortunately, they all drowned.

When we heard that they had drowned they came and tried first aid, but she had already died.

We could not locate the other one but was found by her father who was alerted by other friends.

Mourners who spoke to NewZimbabwe.com on Tuesday at the funeral wake blamed the owners of Donnybrook Racecourse for failing to erect a perimeter fence around the pit.

But a caretaker at the car racing course said a perimeter fence was erected but was later vandalised.
