Shock and Grief as Zimbabwean Pastor Is Fatally Shot in South Africa

Murder South Africa

A Zimbabwean Pastor who went missing on 28 October 2023 in South Africa was found in a mortuary after being fatally shot.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) initiated a murder investigation after finding Ison Mthombeni, also a Bolt driver. Police found him at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital mortuary in Diepkloof, Soweto on 30 October. He had a gunshot wound to the back of his head.

This was after they found Mthombeni’s e-hailing car dumped near Eldorado Park, with bloodstains on the backseat. After finding his car, the Soweto United E-hailing Association (SUEA) organised a search, leading to the discovery of his remains.

Ezoic Mthombeni, a pastor, stayed in Meredale, south of Johannesburg and had a five-year-old child.

Mthombeni’s friend, Bubuya Dube, who introduced him to e-hailing, told SowetanLIVE how SUEA found his car with disturbing evidence:

“The SUEA organised the search and his car was found with a pool of blood and white substance that looked like brains. They started searching across the field close to where the car was found. When we went to the SAPS in Eldorado Park to open a missing person’s case, we were directed to Bara forensics after a body had been found.

“They told us that his body was dumped near a river, which is commonly used for cleansing ceremonies. He was on duty, and we suspect that it was an attempted hijacking. This is so barbaric. He was a very spiritual person who loved God, and he was a pastor who worshipped at House of Treasures Ministries.”
