Vybz Kartel released from jail after an appeal

Crimes and Courts

The man is free now. It was good news for dancehall lovers to a larger extent as the dancehall powerhouse found his freedom yesterday.

One of the biggest reggae dancehall stars, Vybz Kartel, was yesterday released released from jail. This after the musician had spend 12 years in prison for murder.

However, Kartel’s conviction was overturned by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council (JCPC) in Britain on appeal.

Jamaica’s highest court of appeal is still in Britain. The court, named Judicial Committee of the Privy Council (JCPC) is similar to the Zimbabwe’s Supreme Court.

Kartel aged 48, and three other men Shawn Campbell, Kahira Jones and Andre St. John — were all convicted in March 2014 of the murder of an associate, Clive “Lizard” Williams.

Kartel had been immensely popular in the Caribbean island nation and worldwide. The musician is also known as “World Boss”.

At his peak, Kartel collaborated with some of the biggest names in music, including Jay-Z, Rihanna and Eminem.

Regardless of being jailed,  he also promoted his own rum line, shows and a brand of condoms.

Because of his popularity, the trial was closely watched in Jamaica and there was heavy security around the courthouse in downtown Kingston throughout the proceedings.
