Wicknell Chivayo, a businessman facing allegations of corruption, has sought solace in religion, hoping to dispel any lingering negative spirits. His actions have prompted the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) to launch an investigation. Videos circulating online show Chivayo and Mabvuku MP Scott Sakupwanya performing a ritual beside a river, where they were reportedly instructed by an unidentified prophet to immerse themselves in the running water to cleanse away their misfortunes. This public display has further intensified scrutiny on Chivayo, leading ZACC to delve deeper into his alleged corrupt activities.
The ZACC has reportedly amassed significant documentary evidence implicating Chivayo, along with Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu, in a case involving money laundering and abuse of office. The trio is embroiled in a contentious dispute over the supply of election materials to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) ahead of the August 23, 2023, general elections.
During a press briefing on the sidelines of the swearing-in ceremony for High Court Judges at the Constitutional Court in Harare on June 17, ZACC spokesperson Reza revealed that the commission has built a strong case against the three men. He stated, “We have gathered substantial documents which we intend to present to the gentlemen involved. Without compromising the investigation, I want Zimbabwe to know that we have been diligently working on this case. We have collected essential facts, and when this information is formalized on form 242, we plan to take it to court. Expect to see detailed information, including facts, figures, and numbers.”
Reza further warned that if Chivayo, Chimombe, and Mpofu do not voluntarily present themselves to ZACC, the commission would pursue them. “While they have their rights, we have our deadlines. If they do not come forward, we will go after them. Zimbabweans need to know that ZACC is not powerless. President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared that there are no sacred cows in the fight against corruption.”
The allegations against Chivayo include fraudulently altering a contract with South African company Ren-Form and Better Brands, removing his business partners and securing 66% of the payments for himself. The disputed US$40 million tender was for the supply of biometric voter registration kits and other electoral materials to ZEC for the 2023 general elections.
On Sunday, ZACC spokesperson Thandiwe Mlobane announced that the commission would be interviewing Mpofu, Chimombe, and Chivayo to gather further information and clarify the alleged deal with ZEC. It is reported that all three men are currently out of the country.
The unfolding investigation underscores ZACC’s commitment to addressing corruption and holding those involved accountable, reinforcing President Mnangagwa’s stance that no one is above the law in the fight against corruption in Zimbabwe.
